Amazing DIY garden net made from old hula hoops

Most of us probably have at least one hula hoop memory from childhood and some of us might even have one or two of the things still laying around the house. If your hula hooping days have passed, why not reuse them for something else? Here's a way to use them to build your own miniature garden!

You'll need:

  • 1 garden hose
  • 4 slats of wood
  • 1 metal saw
  • twist ties or cable clasps
  • 8 metal stakes
  • 1 hammer
  • 3 hula hoops
  • 1 large net (or maybe 2)
  • 8 elbow brackets
  • screws
  • drill
  • 2 thin plastic hoses
  • garden tools
  • plants of your choice
  • good soil

Here's how to do it:

The first step is to create a rectangle or square with the pieces of wood. The elbow brackets can be used at the corners to make sure the corners remain at 90º. Use the drill and screws to fasten all four pieces together. This will be the foundation of your greenhouse.

Next, hammer the metal stakes into the ground on the inside edge of the foundation. Space them evenly around the inner edge, including the corners.

Fill your box with soil and plant your garden.

Now here come the hula hoops: Break the hoops and stick them onto the ends of the metal stakes. You may have to cut them with garden clippers if they aren't easily breakable.

Cut the netting to fit the ends of the house and fasten it to the hoops with twist ties or clasps.

The final step is to lay a large piece of netting over the remainder of the garden. You can attach one end to a plastic pole that is easily rolled up in order to water or tend to your plants.

Finally, cut the garden hose into small pieces and slice it open lengthwise. Wrap the pieces around the hula hoops to keep the net secure. Keeping hungry bunnies out of your garden and preventing wind or rain from destroying your hard work has never been so easy.
