3 Upcycling Projects For Old Fabrics And Clothing

Everyone has an old pair of jeans and a ratty T-shirt lying around somewhere. If we had to place a bet, we'd guess that you also already know that old clothing and fabrics don't have to get thrown away. In fact, they're perfect for fun DIY upcycling projects! It's time to break out those old, worn-out clothes and tattered fabrics so that we can bring them back to life again. Learn how to sew an adorable cup holder out of an old placemat, turn a T-shirt into an ice pack cover, and create a bold bracelet from old jeans. Save money, save the environment, and have fun creating!

1. Cozy Cup Warmer

You'll Need:

  • old felt placemat
  • white, brown & black felt
  • chalk
  • needle & thread
  • snap clasp
  • fabric glue
  • scissors

Here's How:

1.1 Draw the outline of a fox in chalk on a relatively clean section of an old felt placemat and cut it out. Measure the felt fox and make sure it's large enough to wrap around your favorite mug.

1.2 Cut out a small piece of white felt and sew it onto the end of the fox's tail.

1.3 Cut out brown and black pieces of felt to make the fox's eyes, ears, and nose and sew or glue them onto the fox's head.

1.4 Flip over the fox and secure a snap clasp onto the fox's tail.

1.5 Trace the fox's body onto a piece of black felt and attach the other side of the snap clasp to the black felt fox's nose.

1.6 Sew both pieces of the fox together and your cute cup warmer is finished! The snap clasp you attached to the fox will keep your new fuzzy friend hugging the cup, snug as can be!

2. Cold Pack Cover

You'll Need:

  • old t-shirt
  • scissors
  • needle & thread
  • pins

Here's How:

2.1 Cut a rectangle out of an old t-shirt. Hem the 2 shorter sides, then fold those sides in to meet in the center, making sure they overlap slightly.

2.2 Use pins to hold the fabric in place and sew the 2 shorter sides together securely.

2.3 Flip the cover inside out and insert your cold pack. Now you'll always have a convenient cover for your ice packs!

3. Denim Bracelet

You'll Need:

  • old pair of jeans
  • scissors
  • wire
  • pearl beads
  • pliers

Here's How:

3.1 To make a gorgeous new bracelet, start by cutting the flat felled seam out of an old pair of jeans. Once the seam is cut off, work a wire through it until it comes out the other end.

3.2 Place a pearl bead on both ends of the wire.

3.3 Use pliers to twist up the ends of the wire into a tight spiral, securing the pearl beads in place.

3.4 Wrap your new stylish denim bracelet around your wrist and show it off to all of your friends!
