Build a gorgeous bookshelf by "upcycling" old grocery crates
Decluttering is never a bad idea. But on the other hand, you might just need more shelves.
You know those wooden crates food producers use to transport everything from veggies to wine? You can use them to fashion a quick, stylish solution to the mess.
Here’s how to build shelves that will give your home a cozy, vintage look.
You’ll need:
- wooden crates (ask at your local grocer, wine shop, or of course, online)
- wood varnish and a large paint brush
- wood glue
- large binder clips
- drill and screws
Here's how:
First, varnish the crates. Really, do it. It’ll make all the difference, even though it takes some real elbow grease.
Now pile up the crates in a way that suits your needs and space.
Glue them together and…
…use binder clips to hold the crates in position while the glue is drying.
Leave overnight to dry.
Now screw the crates together with your drill, two screws on each side.
You want everything fixed safely in place.
Voilà! You’re done. Now it’s up to you to decorate your shelves however you want!
Easy to make, but the results are stunning.

These shelves are a genuinely simple, short project that pays off in a big way. Plus, they offer a depth and height that means space even for bigger, harder-to-store books, vases, and other household objects.
