How to transform an ugly tile floor into a work of art

A beautiful bathroom can be a real highlight in any home. And considering that we usually start off our day there, it's always nice when the decor leaves us with a sense of comfort and well-being. But in some apartments the bathroom is very small and doesn't leave much room for creativity or fancy decorating ideas. One blogger found herself in such a situation, which led to a very clever and affordable solution for transforming the floor into a work of art.

The original tile is made of PVC and looks quite boring. But with a little elbow grease this determined blogger was able to turn it into something very special.

The first step was to buy some black and white paint. This particular kind has a raw, chalky look when dry, like the surface of a stone tile.

The next step was to paint the entire floor black. At this point it doesn't look like much of an improvement, but the best is yet to come.

The paint covers the old PVC tile perfectly but you can still see the shape of each tile.

Now for the creative part: the pattern. For this you'll need to find a template that is exactly the same size as the tiles. The template is held down with masking tape which is easy to remove when you're finished.

Tip: These types of templates are available in most craft and hardware stores, or you can order them online here.

The white paint is then applied using several coats to make sure that the black base coat does not show through. When everything is good and dry, you can remove the templates.

When it's finished you'll have an amazing-looking tile floor that's customized to suit your own decorative taste. The acrylic paint is waterproof, but applying an extra coat of clear varnish will help protect it from wear and tear so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor for many years to come.

It's really that easy to transform a dull tile floor into an eye-catching conversation piece and you can save a ton of money in the process. All you need is a bit of paint and a great idea for a pattern. Try it out!
