Homemade Bird Feeders To Perk Up Your Yard

Contrary to popular opinion, you should actually feed birds all year round. Winter can be especially tough on our feathered friends, so it's important to give 'em a helping hand when they're looking for food. And it's a win-win situation because we get to observe them. But there's no need to go out and get store-bought bird food. In fact, it's so much easier to make your own bird feeder stations!

1. Fruit & Nut Bird Feeder

You'll Need:

  • 1 orange
  • scissors
  • twine
  • bird seed
  • almonds
  • dried cranberries
  • coconut oil

Here's How:

1.1 Cut an orange in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.

1.2 Using a pair of scissors or a knife, cut two holes in each orange half.

1.3 Thread a piece of twine through the holes.

1.4 Fill up the orange halves with the bird seed mix, almonds, and dried cranberries.

1.5 Melt coconut oil and fill the orange halves with it.

1.6 Allow the coconut oil in the orange halves to set. And that's it – your bird feeders are ready to go. Hang them up on a tree or bush like you would any suet cake. Your local birdies will definitely love you for it.

2. Pine Cone Bird Feeder

You'll Need:

  • 1 large pine cone
  • twine
  • peanut butter
  • bird seed

Here's How:

2.1 Tie a piece of twine to the top of a large pine cone.

2.2 Roll the cone in peanut butter so it's completely covered.

2.3 Now roll the peanut butter-coated pine cone in the bird seed mix so that seeds stick to the peanut butter. Take your finished pine cone bird feeder and hang it up in your garden or balcony.

Forget about store-bought suet cakes! Your local birdies are going to receive these homemade bird treats with open arms (or wings, actually). And they're so much fun to make. You can even get kids involved and introduce them to your region's bird life. Give them a try. Your feathered friends will love you for it!
