2 Nifty Upcycling Tricks For Old Leggings

When we find small tears in our leggings, we often simply throw them out. But here's why you shouldn't!

1. Table Mat

You'll need:

  • a pair of leggings
  • a piece of cardboard
  • thread
  • plate

Here's how:

1.1 First, place a plate on the piece of cardboard and draw around it. The plate should be about the same diameter you want your place mat.

Cut out the circle, leaving a border around it.

1.2 Mark the center of the circle and make 20 incisions into the border at equal distances from one another.

1.3 Stretch ten pieces of thread from one side to the other. Tie them together at the center using another piece of thread.

1.4 Now take the leggings and, depending on how much material you need, cut several narrow strips from both legs. Afterwards, sew them together so you can go onto the next step.

1.5 Wrap the long legging strip around the cardboard in a spiral, making sure to go over and under the pieces of thread.

Sew down the end of the leggings strip. Loosen the pieces thread and tie them together with the threads on the opposite side. Cut away any remaining thread.

What a great idea for giving your old leggings a new lease of life!

2. Shrug

You'll need:

  • a pair of leggings
  • scissors
  • needle and thread
  • buttons

Here's how:

2.1 Fold the leggings together and cut a triangle out of the crotch.

2.2 On the front of the leggings, cut from the crotch to the waistband.

2.3 Open up both parts and sew the edges into a seam.

2.4 To finish,  sew on a few buttons.

If you have the waistband at the bottom, you can transform leggings that you no longer like into a chic shrug.

It's not just leggings that have many uses — a simple throw can be used as a top, dress or skirt, as these 9 fashion tips show.
