Gourd-geous DIY Paper Mâché Pumpkin Decoration

Fall is in the air, and that means it's pumpkin season! Whether carved, made into a candle, or even just displayed in its original form on your front porch, pumpkins make gorgeous, festive fall decorations. While some people decorate their yard or home with plastic pumpkins, they tend to be a bit expensive, plus they're bad for the environment. But there's a more sustainable and affordable option out there for sprucing up your yard or making your home extra cozy! This DIY stacked pumpkin decoration is made out of old newspapers, so it's a great way to recycle while getting you and your loved ones into the fall spirit.

You'll Need:

  • old newspapers
  • garbage bags
  • packaging tape
  • paste
  • paintbrush
  • green, orange & dark orange paint
  • hot glue gun
  • leaves
  • twigs

Here's How:

1. Fill a garbage bag with crumpled old newspaper.

2. Tie up the trash bag at the top and use packaging tape to create grooves in its surface so that it resembles a pumpkin.

3. Prepare a paper mâché paste or mix together some craft glue with water and tear some additional old newspapers into strips. Brush the surface of the filled trash bag with paste.

4. Dip the strips of newspaper into the paste and cover the surface of the stuffed garbage bag.

5. Wait for the paste to dry, then paint your paper mâché pumpkin orange.

6. Use the darker orange to paint grooves onto the pumpkin so that it looks even more realistic.

7. Use a hot glue gun to glue either artificial leaves or leaves that you collected outside to the outer surface of the pumpkin.

8. Make 2 more paper mâché pumpkins using the same method as you did for the first one, but make each one slightly smaller than the last. Tie together some twigs to form rings and stack them between the pumpkins. Create a green paper mâché stem and attach it to the top pumpkin.

Making this stacked paper mâché pumpkin decoration is a super fun fall activity, plus the final product looks great! Once you're done, it's probably time for some pumpkin soup – or maybe even a pumpkin spice latte!
