How to charge your cell phone with an onion

Mobile chargers are becoming more common by the day and for good reason. If there's no outlet around or you forget your adapter, these little power packs can be a big help. But if you don't already have one of these technical wonders, don't worry — you can actually make one yourself with an onion. That's right! Energy doesn't get any greener than this...

You'll need:

  • an onion
  • a screwdriver
  • an energy drink
  • a charger cable

Here's how:

Using a screwdriver, poke a hole in the onion and then another one directly above it.

Fill a bowl with the energy drink and put the onion in it. The holes should be completely submerged in the liquid.

Let the onion soak for half an hour, then take it out and dry it. It should have soaked up most of the liquid.

Now you can plug the USB connection on the cable into the onion. It's best to do this with an old cable that you don't want to use for any other purpose.

And the charging can begin! The "energy transfer" doesn't take long. In only about 10 to 15 minutes your phone will have sucked all the "juice" out of the onion. If you want to use the cable on an outlet again, be sure to clean it and let it dry to avoid any kind of shock or short-circuit.

Some people might find it strange, but you have to admit that it's a pretty original idea. So the next time you're out and your phone needs charging, grab an onion and an energy drink. It might not be the best solution every time, but it's certainly an interesting experiment. Some might even a call it a magic trick!
