Make Your Home Movie Projector With A Smartphone And Magnifying Glass

It sounds like an unaffordable dream: a real movie theater right in your home! This is exactly why more and more people are buying projectors, but they are very expensive and can easily cost several hundred dollars. Fortunately, you can build your own projector with your phone, a few bucks, and this handy DIY guide!

You'll need:

  • cardboard box (a shoe box would be perfect)
  • magnifying glass, at least 5 times magnification (check the dollar store for this)
  • pencil
  • box cutter
  • tape
  • smartphone

Here's how it works:

Place the magnifying glass on the edge of the shoe box and trace around it with a pencil.

Cut out the circle using a box cutter. Work slowly so that the hole doesn't get too big. The magnifying glass is supposed to fit snugly inside of it.

Attach the magnifying glass to the shoe box with tape.

Cut a small hole in the opposite side of the box and slide the charging cable for your smartphone through it.

Turn up the screen brightness on your phone as high as possible.

Now here comes the trickiest part because the screen has to be upside down. On an iPhone, you can do this by going to System Settings > General > Settings > Assistive Touch. Here you can select how the image is displayed. For an Android smartphone, there are different apps for example Ultimate Rotation Control.

Now just place your phone into the cardboard box, connect it to the charging cable and play a video. You can use a paper clip to create a stand for your phone. To adjust the sharpness, push the smartphone back and forth inside of the box.

Now all you have to do is make it nice and cozy and enjoy the film. But the best part about the mini-projector? There's no annoying fan sounds like with a big projector. And if you have a way to charge your phone on the go, enough darkness and the right surface to project onto, you can even watch films outside.

Here's a video tutorial:

Glue a magnifying glass in a box and put your phone inside. That’s simply amazing!

If you have problems finding the right position for the screen, because your walls are colorful or there are no surfaces that are large enough, you can also hang up a white sheet. And just like that you've got a cinema all to yourself. The only thing left to complete this picture would be a popcorn machine. Of course you can also use your projector to show the photos from your last vacation.
