This homemade pallet bench is a real eye-catcher

A homemade bench can be a real eye-catcher and also a welcome change from the same old models we’ve seen a thousand times. All you need is a saw, a power drill, and a few screws and the rest is easy. Here you’ll learn how you can make a stylish and super comfy bench with just a few pallets.

Step 1: How high do you want to sit?

The height of the sitting surface depends on how many pallets you use and the type of material you want to sit on. If you plan on adding some very thick cushions, you’ll need fewer pallets. In any case, it’s always a good idea to test the sitting height before screwing everything together. You should also check to make sure that the wood isn’t badly damaged, doesn’t have any big holes, and is relatively smooth so that you don’t have to sand it too much later.

Step 2: The backrest

Pick a pallet that you think would make a good backrest. Starting from one end, measure out 50 cm (19 2/3 inches) from one side. Mark it and cut the pallet into two pieces at this position.

If desired or necessary, you can fill the gaps in the backrest with boards from the other piece of the cut pallet.

You can secure these boards with screws or nails.

Step 3: Time to assemble

Saw off two pieces of approximately 30 cm (11 3/4 inches) each from the cut pallet boards.

Screw these pieces to either side of the backrest so that they fit in at least two slats deep.

Now you can slip the backrest in between the slats of the rear sitting surface and secure it.

Step 4: The finishing touch

To add more support to the backrest you can cut two boards to a length of 52 cm (20 1/2 inches) each. Recline the backrest to the position you find most comfortable.

Now screw the boards to the backrest and the sitting surface to secure the backrest in place.

Turn the entire bench over and secure the the backrest to the sitting area with a few more screws.

Your bench is now finished, but you can take your design a bit further by adding armrests and giving it a coat of wood stain. And once you’re done putting on those finishing touches, the only thing left to do is find the right cushions and then sit back and enjoy your new seat.
