Lots of holes, lots of possibilities: A modern peg wall for every room
When it comes to furniture, most people have a very specific idea of what they are looking for. The shape, color, and size all have to be just right and it's often difficult to find that exact combination. But have you ever considered creating your own customized furniture? This shelf requires a bit of material and some time, but it's the perfect way to make something that fits your own unique tastes and needs.
You'll need:
- Two sheets of plywood, both the same size
- Measuring tape
- Pen
- Drill and hole saw bit
- Wooden dowels the same diameter as the saw bit
- Wood planks or pre-fab shelves
- Paint and brushes (any color of your choice)
- Screws
Tip: Most building supply stores offer a cutting service. If possible, have your plywood cut to size before you take it home.
Here's how:
Use the measuring tape to mark off evenly spaced vertical and horizontal lines on one piece of plywood. When you're done, it should look like a grid made of dots.
Now you can use the hole saw drill bit to drill holes where the dots are. Set the drill directly on the marking to make sure that the holes are an equal distance from each other. After drilling the first hole, you should check that the dowels fit in before continuing.
When the holes are done, you can paint the plywood any color you like.
You can also paint the wooden dowels and the wooden planks that will act as the shelves.
Now lay the drilled plywood over the other piece of plywood and screw them together.
When that's done you can stick the dowels in anywhere you like and secure them with screws from the back. Just make sure that some are arranged so the planks can be set on them to form shelves.
Ta-dah! Your new peg board is finished. All you have to do now is put it on the wall and you can start decorating it any way you want.

Depending on what you like, you can also leave the wood unpainted. In that case it would be a good idea to give it a coat of oil or varnish for protection.
Or how about multicolored in a smaller version?
Anyone who just can't get enough of this idea can do a whole wall. In this version, LACK shelves from IKEA were put on the pegs.
Kitchen, kid's room, or home office — a peg wall can be a great addition to any room.
If you're good with tools and building things, you can also come up with a design that allows more spontaneous positioning of the pegs. Then you can rearrange the shelves on a whim!
