4 DIY Ideas For Gorgeous Lighting At Home & In The Garden

Subtle lighting provides the perfect ambience both at home and in the garden. To create the desired effect, candles, lanterns and fairy lights are usually the most popular choices. But instead of buying the usual run-of-the-mill fare from hardware stores, we recommend giving the following projects a try. Whether it's for your apartment, terrace or garden, these ideas will certainly bring light into your life!

1. Can Lanterns

You'll Need:

  • empty drinks cans (number dependent on the length of the fairy lights)
  • water
  • 2 hair ties
  • spray paint
  • fairy lights

Here's How:

1.1 Fill a drinks can with water. Keep it in the freezer until the water has completely frozen. Roll two hair ties onto the can to mark the top and bottom edges.

1.2 Make horizontal incisions into the can at ½-inch intervals between the hair ties.

1.3 Remove the hair ties and place the can in hot water until the ice inside has completely melted.

1.4 Dry the can and spray paint it. Leave the paint to dry.

1.5 Now carefully press the can together until it looks like a lantern.

1.6 Now take the fairy lights and insert at least two lights through the opening at the top of the drinks can. If you need to, you can tie the lights together before inserting them into the lantern. All you need to do now is hang them on tree branches or along the balcony. What a beautiful sight!

2. Sparkly Fairy Candle

You'll Need:

  • large Mason jar with hanger
  • spray adhesive
  • glitter
  • cardboard fairy
  • candle

Here's How:

2.1 Spray the inside of the Mason jar with adhesive. Pour in some glitter and move the jar around so that the glitter sticks to the sides.

2.2 Draw a fairy onto some card and cut it out. Stick it on the inside of the jar.

2.3 Place a candle inside the glass and hang it up in your garden or on the balcony.

3. Tin Can Lights

You'll Need:

  • cans
  • bamboo pipe
  • nail
  • candle

Here's How:

3.1 Take a clean tin can and place it over a bamboo pipe.

3.2 Next, carefully hammer a design of your choice into the can using a nail.

3.3. Light a candle and place it in the can. When it's dark, you'll be able to see your fantastic designs in all their glory.

4. Glass Stone Lantern

You'll Need:

  • large Mason jar
  • wire
  • glass stones
  • hot glue gun
  • candle

Here's How:

4.1 First, wrap wire around the neck of the Mason jar so you can hang it up later. Next, take another piece of wire and form a handle. Attach the handle to the wire around the Mason jar neck.

4.2 Use a hot glue gun to attach glass stones to the outside of the Mason jar. Next, light a candle inside of the jar and hang the lantern up for a wonderfully subtle lighting source.

Whether you opt for using cans or Mason jars, these 4 ideas are sure to bring some light into your home, garden and soul.
